On Dec. 4th, 2013,we found Mr.Robert Tisserand states on his own blog that the application of 5 drops of Eucalyptus oil to cats is not toxic at all, and we couldn't help posting our comments to save the lives of beloved feline species. We thought his words have been remaining influential over a lot of people, especially his believers or his blog readers. Considering his behavior in the past, we truly hesitated to post our comments on his blog; however we made a brave try, and disputed with him on risks of essential oils in cats. Because he refuses to post our comments in full.
To Mr.Robert Tisserand:
Please do not state for your blog readers that citrus oils are safe for feline species. EOs that contain monoterpene hydrocarbons are extremely toxic to cats, because these EO coponents are extremely hydrophobic, and easy to evaporate due to light molecular weight. These xenobiotics need sufficient enzymes to be metabolized into water soluble substances in the body system of animals.
Report from The ASPCA (Animal Poison Control Center ) was published
They report toxicosis of Tea Tree oil in companion animals in detail.
They say the amount of TTO used ranges from 0.1m to 85mL.
The latter is definitely overdosing, but 0.1mL corresponds approximately only to 2 to 3 drops.
Aromatherapy Hazard? *@*
Our Association issues critial assesments on ongoing aromatherapy for companion animals due to various scientific reasons; however, we do know the real merrits of genuine Essential Oils in order to avoid iatrogenic diseases such as Cushing disease. To minimize disadvantages of aromatherapy in animals, we think it is the most important to realize it is time for the truth of Aromatherapy Business.
Dementia and Aromatherapy
As covered by NHK program and other programs of famous entertainers, Rosemary and Lavender blend oils have become a gig boom as the remedy to prevent dementia. Seeking the essential oils, elderly people rushed into aroma-shops in shopping malls, where the essential oils introduced in the TV programs are all sold out. We hear that arrival of those products is up in the air in many stores.
Since a professor of a famous university recommended going on waves of the mass media, elderly people had to rush to aroma-shops without any doubt. Many went buying essential oils, for their beloved parents with desperate hope.
But, please wait a second. Never think Aromatherapy is that easy! Unless you apply essential oils after you understand well about their merits and demerits, terrible adverse effects can occur by the essential oils, even if you may think it is beneficial to health. First of all, essential oil components are organic compounds in the same level of poisons and drugs. Some may feel comforted by nice fragrance, but as soon as it gets into our body, it must be detoxified into water-soluble substances at once, and the body must discharge these compounds at top gear, avoiding accumulation within the body. If “healing property” alone is spotlighted, we will be trapped into a big hole.
The professor, who recommended Rosemary essential oil blend on TV, sells blend oil products developed by-himself at the university-launched venture company. We think whoever studied aromatherapy should know that Rosemary oil is one of essential oils that have specific chemo-type, very different in component batch by batch. It is never the essential oil, as generalized as in saying “it is good for specific ailment”.
Classification of the chemo-type differs in Japan and Europe. This is not limited to Rosemary essential oil. There is a vital reason why generalization is not possible in any essential oil, as in saying “XX essential oil works for XX”. In other words, we can only say “such effects could be obtained, when such essential oil with such components was applied”. Has the component analysis of the essential oils used for the blend, which is said to work for dementia, been released available? If the professor uses essential oils with attached component analysis sheets, does he know that free analysis sheets attached to products are usually unreliable? Gas chromatography alone cannot identify the names of components of essential oils.
Nevertheless, major essential oil dealers sell their products with free analysis sheets by openly terming them Gas chromatography data. The dark side of aromatherapy industry is politically connected, not a circumstance to the food mislabeling. Chemical analysts of sound judgment in Japan and all over the world publicly state that the majority of essential oils in the market has a sort of artificial intervention. Does the professor know such fact?
Especially in cases of elderly people, certain drugs are often prescribed and dosed in many cases. We must know that essential oil component and dosed drugs in the body sometimes interact adversely, when living daily in the environment with strong aroma of essential oils. There are cases of increasing drug efficiency, negating effects, or strengthening adverse effects. It is known that essential oil components can largely affect enzymes within the body. We wonder if instructors of aromatherapy know such fact. When heavily contacting aroma components almost daily, the issue of sensitization (allergy) against the chemical substance cannot be ignored as well.
So much more than that, if living with cats around, do you know that aroma of essential oils can connect to the event of endangering animal lives? Also, if newly born babies are around, do you know there is the same kind of risk of harmful effects? Enzyme of liver phase II in newly born babies is not complete as in the case of cats, and possibility of refusing breast-feeding by aroma cannot be denied.
Aromatherapy is a complementary alternative medicine that we can never perform easily. We hope that by all means you will review right aromatherapy safe and secure to people and also to animals using right essential oils.
Carnosic acid and carnosol contained in Rosemary plant, etc. which is said to have the effect of preventing brain cells dying belong to diterpenoid with high-molecular-weight. This is the component to produce the effect of the brain rejuvenation, when using dried Rosemary as herb medicine. Diterpenoids are heavy compounds, and so they are the substances not easily to evaporate into essential oil component during the steam distillation. Many aromatherapists recommend diffusing Rosemary essential oil in the room, stating Rosemary works for brain rejuvenation. Please do not confuse the herb material efficacy ingested as water-soluble compounds of the plant component with the effect/efficacy of the essential oil, which is derived from lipid-soluble organic compounds in the plant.
It is extremely difficult to obtain 100% genuine essential oils without adulterants. Animals have different liver functions per species. Please, keep foremost in mind that we should never forget giving sufficient consideration and attention for animals when we perform aromatherapy.
